“Dadasaheb Phalke Awards”

List of “Dadasaheb Phalke Award” Winners From the year 1969 Till Date

This award was initiated for recalling and remembering Mr . Dadasaheb Phalke (1870-1944).

He is also known as ‘The Father of Indian Cinema’ , the pioneer who produced and directed the first full length Indian Feature Film, ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in the year 1913.

This is a cash award of Rs 10 Lakhs(US $ 16000/-) and a  Swarna Kamal/Golden Lotus Medal.

Birendranth Sircar (1901-1980) in Bengali

He Founded  International Filmcraft and New Theatres, in Kolkota.

Prithviraj Kapoor (1906-1972)
1971-19TH NFA
He acted in the first Indian film with audio ‘ Alam Ara’ in 1931.
He founded a touring drama company in 1944.
His award was received by his son Raj Kapoor.

Pankaj Mullick (1905-1978)  in Bengali

Pankaj Mullick was a Music Composer who provided background music in live orchestras during the silent films .

Sulochana/Ruby Myers(1907-1983)  in Hindi

She was the first sex symbol of the black and white hindi cinema in 1925.
 Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy(1908-1977) in Telgu
1974-22nd NFA
He has 15 Telugu feature films for which he was also awarded Padma Bhushan and a Doctor of Letters honour.

Dhirndranath Ganguly(1893-1978) Bengali
1975-23rd NFA
He is the founder of Bengali films industry. He also founded ‘Indo British Film Company’ in the year 1918 and ‘British Dominion Films Studio’ in the year 1929 for Bengali movies.

Kanan Devi(1916-1992) in Bengali.
1976-24th NFA  
Ms.Kanan Devi was the first woman who acted in the silent Bengali movies in 1920. She founded her own films and also sang Rabindranath tagore’s songs in them.

Nitin Bose(1897-1986) in Bengali and Hindi

1978-26th NFA

He was a Cinematographer, Director and Screenplay writer who also introduced playback singing in Indian Cinema in the year 1935. His Bengali movie, ‘Bhagya Chakra’ and its Hindi remake, ‘Dhoop Chhaon’ had the playback singing.

Raichand Boral(1903-1981) in Bengali and Hindi

1978-26th NFA

He was the Music Directer in the music films Directed by Nitin Bose and also the one to introduce playback singing in Bengali Films.

Sohrab Modi(1897-1984) in Hindi

1979-27th NFA

He introduced classic dramas of Shakesphere through his acting and direction in Indian Cinema.

Paidi Jairaj(1909-2000) in Hindi and Telugu

1980-28th NFA

He portrayed Indian Historical characters in the Indian cinema through his acting and direction.

Naushad( 1919-2006) in Hindi

1981-29th NFA

As a Music Director he introduced techniques of sound mixing in Indian Cinema. starting from his first movie ‘Prem Nagar’ in the year 1940.

L.V.Prasad(1908-1994) in Hindi and Tamil 

1982-30th NFA

As an Actor, he initiated by acting in the first audio films ‘Alam Ara’ in Hindi, ‘Kalidas in Tamil and ‘Bhakta Prahalada’ in Telugu, which were released in the year 1931. As an Actor, Director and Producer, he produced more than 150 movies in various languages through his own founded ‘Prasad Studios’ in the year 1965 and  Prasad Colour Film Laboratory in the year 1976.



Durga Khote(1905-1991) in Hindi and Marathi

1983-31st NFA

She produced short films and documentary films. from her own founded ‘Fact Films’ company and ‘Durga Khote Productions’ company and acted in the first marathi audio movie V.Shantaram’s  ‘Ayodhecha Raja’ in the year 1932.

In  Rishi Kapoor-Dimple starred ‘Bobby’ of the year 1973 Durga Khote  had acted as the grand mother of the heroine.

Satyajit Ray(1921-1992) in Bengali 

1984-32nd NFA

He directed ‘Pather Panchali’ his first Bengali film in the year 1955 and attracted the entire world towards Indian Cinema and conferred with Bharat Ratna in year 1992.

V.Shantaram(1901-1990)  in Hindi and Marathi

1985-33rd NFA

Mr.Shantaram produced and directed the first Indian Colour Movie, ‘Sairanhri’ in the year 1931 and the first Marathi audio movie ’Ayodhyecha Raja’ in the year 1932.

B.Nagi Reddy(1912-2004) in Telugu

1986-34th NFA

He founded ‘Vijaya Vahini Studios’, the then biggest Films Studios in Asia and produced more than 50 movies from the year 1950.

 Raj Kapoor(1924-1988)  in Hindi

1987-35th NFA

Mr.Raj Kapoor  was a movie actor and producer and one of the greatest performers in the Indian Film Industry.

Ashok Kumar(1911-2001) in Hindi

Mr. Ashok Kumar was a popular Hindi character actor and phenomenally successful playback singer of Hindi films.

Lata Mangeshkar(Born on 28th September 1929) in Hindi and Marathi

Mr.Marooh Sultanpuri was a poplular Lyricist and has written more than 8000 songs since his first movie ‘Shahjehan’ in 1946.

Mr.Dilip Kumar  famous as a ’Tragedy King” acted in more than 60 movies his first ‘Jwar Bhata’ in 1944.

Adoor Gopala Krishnan(Born on 03rd July 1941)

In 1972 He won the National Film Award for the ‘Best Direction’ for his first movie ‘Swayamvaram’  for portrayal of complex social problems in simple manner.
